10:51 pm - Deprivation and an assault on a couple of senses.
Yes, I'm making it sound far worse than it was. So ... the water got turned off at 9 a.m. (I'd just finished everything at 9:01, including doing my eyedrops about two hours early).

Then they decided to start cutting the grass outside, with the aroma of all those freshly released juices wafting up to my wide-open window. Yuck.

But, wait, that's not all. If you call now, we'll include fire alarm testing, at No. Extra. Charge. It's no wonder I was exhausted by everything.

So, all I did was watch ONE episode of Kitchen Nightmares and couldn't watch any more because Chrome was misbehavin'. ::sighs:: But I might try to sneak one more in before bed.

Tycho: They’re all done, and they look great.  If you’ve enjoyed seeing my associate’s take on the individual characters, high quality prints are available either as a set, or individually.  Kiko’s new “Scorestreak” shirt just came back from our shirt printer, and we have it for the ladies and also for manz. http://penny-arcade.com/2013/05/22/childs-play-tournament-results

Gabe: So before the tournament we let everyone place side bets on who among the PA staff would have the best score. All the money went right to Child’s Play and those who backed the right horse so to speak would get their names posted on the site. Well I am sad to say that Robert Khoo and his team took the honors with a score of -4. My team played hard but we only managed a -1. So here are the names of Robert’s supporters: Amber Armstrong Ben Wallis Brandi Murphy David Hanson Dwayne McDonald eric lee Jacob Rogers Jon Bankard Jonathan Serna Jordan Parker Kevin Dent Kyle Lichtenberg Liam…

08:58 pm - News Post: MS stuff

http://penny-arcade.com/2013/05/22/ms-stuff

Gabe: I was at the Xbox One reveal yesterday morning and overall I found it pretty disappointing. I feel like I wasn’t the target demographic for the presentation. I like to watch TV but what I like more is playing video games. I don’t care about sports games and EA has taught me over the years not to believe any of their pre-release bullshot videos. I also hate the Kinect. Every time I try to use it for playing a game or navigating the Xbox, the result is unreliable and frustrating. I like Call of Duty but their high resolution, motion captured dog and hyper intelligent fish didn’t get…

Tycho: With Gabriel’s adoption of the Surface Pro (and thus, a gaming capable PC) as a lifestyle totem, we have penetrated so far into weirdo territory that I will hear beepboops of unknown provenance over there and wonder where they’re from.  We played Sanctum back in “the day,” liked it, and then interred it for some reason I don’t entirely recall.  I knew the sequel was coming out, and I was gonna say we should play it, but he beat me to it.  Get your head around that shit. We haven’t been able to play it for the last couple days because of…

05:35 pm - PAR Article: Microsoft is changing the definition of “used” and “new” games,

/report/article/microsoft-will-change-the-definition-of-used-and-new-games-and-i-doubt-youl

Ben Kuchera: The Xbox One is a console that’s likely to kill our idea of what a physical game purchase means. According to a story published on Wired, each game will be installed to your hard drive, and you can then play without the disc in the drive. What happens if you pass the disc to a friend? Well, that’s where things get interesting. “In other words, what happens to our traditional concept of a “used game”? This is a question for which Microsoft did not yet have an answer, and is surely something that game buyers (as well as renters and lenders) will want to…

07:10 am - More books 2013.
36. Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks. Interesting! A bit more dry than I had expected, but good.

37. The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. Apparently everyone read this when they were kids except me. Glad I finally did.

38. The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet by Alicia Silverstone. Meh. Some of the recipes look good, though.

39. Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV by Jennifer L. Pozner. This is SO GOOD. For real, everyone should read it. It's smart and has a sense of humor. READ THIS.

40. Fashionable Food: Seven Decades of Food Fads by Sylvia Lovegren. So entertaining! You, too, can now relive the fascinating decades in which gelatin and marshmallows were U.S. obsessions.

11:24 pm - A mostly terrific Trek day!
But, first, I got to ignore all sorts of necessary things, such as getting food and dropping in at the drug store. Why? Because I was really feeling cold. And I dawdled and delayed in taking a shower, though that turned out to be a wise move when the co-leader of the vision group called. Too bad her news was so bad: our former leader suffered a stroke and isn't expected to make it. Mind you, she's in her 90s, so it's not as if death would come as such as surprise. But she's suffered so many losses during her life which is what happens when you outlive just about everybody. As far as I know, we're still having our meeting next week.

I finally got my act together so I would be ready when church-John picked me up. I didn't do my hair but just wore my red satin scarf as a glam coverup. As I didn't have time to buy snacks, I packed some of my fancy power bars and my bottle of coloured water. C-J was late, but we still got into our screening room 6 minutes after the starting time, leaving nearly half an hour for more commercials. But at least we didn't miss anything.

I loved the movie ... what I could see of it. I'll be going again a couple of times (after all, this is Trek and I've missed it). I got teary-eyed in a couple of places but nothing like the wall of tears that I experience Every. Single. Time before the opening credits of the 2009 reboot.

So, when it was all over, C-J was confused, even though I tried to tell him how things had happened in the original reality. Harder than I thought it would be.

Anyway, he got me home after 6 and I trudged in with the remainder of his popcorn which I had for dinner. Nutrition? What's that? It was very muggy, even though there'd been a short but heavy rain while we'd been indoors.

Okay, so I'm just about zonked out and need to go to bed. But I'll just pop in to my fave sites ... for a moment or three.

04:35 pm - Sentinel beta?
Okay, I am nearing the point where I'm going to need a non-JaneDavitt beta for a Sentinel story. It'll be in the 8k word range and I don't expect miracles, just a little help with anything that glaringly obviously bad. You're most likely to encounter typos, dropped words, and those situations in which I think the characters are wearing clothes they've already taken off and vice versa. There is porn but it's actually more of a plotty story. I'd probably have it to you within the next 48 hours. I hope.

/report/article/call-of-duty-will-play-the-same-on-next-generation-consoles-but-will-be-muc

Ben Kuchera: There is something deeply strange about seeing Call of Duty: Ghosts running on the next-generation engine that will fuel the future of the series. The first thing that jumps out at you is that it does not look that much better. There is no moment where you gasp in joy, or your jaw drops open. Instead, you’ll notice a moment here or there where things look almost uncanny, or you’ll get a sense of seeing more detail than you’re used to perceiving. Everything moves very smoothly. It begins to sink in slowly, and soon you begin to pick up little details and effects that may…

02:19 pm - This can't be good.
I don't know what's going on, but it can't be good.

There's a police car and an ambulance in front of the apartment building next to mine, and a fire truck just pulled up.

ETA:  Now two apartment maintenance guys are out there.

More:  The fire truck, police and ambulance have left.  The ambulance was running lights and siren when it left.  The maintenance men are still in the apartment building.  I wonder what happened.  There is obviously something that the maintenance men need to fix.

11:57 pm - Fireworks vs Thunderstorm = Clash of the Titans!
Well, that's what happened tonight, well into the fireworks display. Suddenly we had a drenching downpour and occasional rumbles of thunder (but no lightning). After the initial torrents of water, there were some puny individual fireworks, but it was clear these were just from some of the bystanders in the park nearby, and not the Main Event. Even now there's a steady rain falling. So, it wasn't that much fun for anyone who'd gone outdoors to try to enjoy them.

But - hey - at least we'd had a mostly warm and sunny day, not that I would know, as I'd stayed indoors. Still, I managed to amuse myself. I texted church-John in the morning (after his languorous normal waking time of 10:30) and asked if he'd like to go see the new Trek movie tomorrow afternoon. He replied in the affirmative and we texted each other back and forth several times, getting sillier by the text. And I'm shocked (shocked, I tell you), because he knows so little of Trek canon. Ha! Will he ever be surprised! Anyway, I'm looking forward to having a terrific time tomorrow, with adult conversation afterwards. Yay!

11:31 pm - Amid all of yesterday's serenity, I forgot about the hilarity!
So ... when I walked into the social hall as soon as I arrived, I spied Rev. Deana and her fairly-new wife, Janet, doing stuff at a table near the stage. I approached and thanked them for their kindness in allowing those of us not present to watch the wedding via webcast. I mentioned how cute it was to see Rev. Deana especially being such a "softy". If you saw the Rev., I doubt you'd call her that. But, hey, that's what getting married can do to a person!

But, wait, that's not all. When the service started, a Sunday commercial was announced. [I used to do those ... nearly 20 years ago. The best ones use humour.] To my surprise and joy, guess who did the commercial? Yup, Rev. D and Janet. Rev. D was wearing a baseball camp and WHINING about wanting to go to camp. Then a flirtatious Janet, wearing a feather boa, walked up and announced that there WAS going to be a summer camp ... in our Adult Spiritual Education programme. It was going to include such courses as The Dysfunctional Family based on Genesis, etc., etc. It was a hoot. I can't wait to watch the webcast tomorrow to see it/them again!

Oh, my. How I love my church and its uniqueness!!! Yayyyyy!!!!!

08:59 pm - London
I'm gonna be in London from 27th May to 3rd June, if anyone would like to meet for coffee or something?

I'm mostly going to see Les Mis on the 30th (my birthday!) and then catch a two or three other shows while I'm there, and also spend too much money in bookshops, should be fun :)

(also, any advice as to where to go: bookshops, geeky stuff, coffee shops, etc, would be grand. I haven't been to London in ages and the previous times I mostly did typical touristy stuff.)

06:09 pm - PAR Article: Shadow Warrior reboot keeps setting and katana, ditches sexism, racism, and MP

/report/article/shadow-warrior-reboot-keeps-setting-and-katana-ditches-sexism-racism-and-mp

Ben Kuchera: Everyone involved with the upcoming reboot of the PC classic Shadow Warriors wants to make one thing absolutely clear: This is a reimagined version of the game. None of the original assets were used, although the main character, setting, and some aspects of the story and combat were retained. The interesting bit, however, is what will be missing. Getting the team together “At Devolver we had this idea of completely rebooting Shadow Warrior. It’s not an HD remake,” Devolver’s Nigel Lowrie told me over the phone. “At the time we were doing Serious Sam 3, I…

Tycho: What I actually said was “Yes Jamie, Thank You Jamie,” but that comic sucks.  This comic improves substantially on reality. I met one of the guys on my team at the first Golf Tourney we ever did, and we kept in touch - he’s pretty sturdy, as I recall.  And the “format” is Team Scramble, one of several co-op variants, which has everyone hitting from the best position each time and ultimately sharing in the best score.  I would never say that this meant you should bet on my team, or whatever, or follow my curse-laden journal of horrors on #CPGolf,…

11:43 pm - A day of purpose, beauty and serenity.
Or ... you could simply call it Sunday. Well, it was a splendid day. I'd already decided I was wearing my navy polka-dot float and my real pearls. And I was on duty (even though I was feeling a titch nauseous prior to the service). Church-John surprised me by wearing a vibrant red shirt which just happened to match Brent's vestments and the altar cloth for Pentecost. I was a little saddened that we'd abandoned the practice of reading scripture in a different language, so the only "foreign" content was the Anthem, sung in Spanish.

I felt wonderful being up at the altar, distilling Brent's sermon on being reached through the mind and heart. After church, I sat with RS and the other friend who - along with me - make up the Holy Rollers. It was gorgeous out (even though there was still a chance of rain). My cab driver was very sweet. The first thing he said to me after I was inside was that I had a beautiful smile. ::sighs:: No, these experiences can't be bought.

I took it easy when I got in and found another show to distract me, namely the more foul-mouthed counterpart, Hell's Kitchen. Oh. My. Well, I've watched about half of season 6 and have one or two episodes to go. Okay, back to watching and then I hope to have a well-deserved and restful sleep (as I'd had a weird unscheduled nap earlier).

06:43 pm - That computer problem and the RDJ question....
I want respond to all of you individually. But my computer is working only when it feels like it.

On that front some of you made some suggestions that made me try some things.

A) in my living room I have to use an extension cord so I tried some place else. No luck.

B) on the suggestion that my cord us bad. I tried using my cord on my mom's computer and it works fine there. So not the cord.

C) last suggestion was a bad battery. My mom's power cord us not working on my computer any better than mine does, so I'm going with this as the problem.

I should be getting a back pay check from SSI in June and now I'm more sure than ever that thus Money needs to for a Mac.

As for the RDJ thing. I've decided I will probably rent Iron Man and give it a try. He seems to have really changed this time. But since at the moment I can't answer personally to anyone, I want say, I wasn't making judgements on anyone else's views on him. I realize many or even most people really don't care how celebrities conduct their personal lives. I believe though I did say that u was asking about if the movie was worth giving him another chance...not a list of good deeds. I'm not discounting the good deeds at all, I commend him for them, but they came after 20+years of putting strangers lives at risk with his behavior so I don't see it as erasing his past either. Which is why I specifically said I didn't want a lecture on why he was a great guy.

I sadly will probably not be answering any responses until after the 1st so don't feel slighted if you don't get a response.

08:49 am - Dr Who blah ...
I am really fed up with River Song appearing every five minutes. If Moffat wants us to bother trying to wrap our brains around all his convoluted time-streams, he mustn't expect us to forget all the ones that came before.

I wasn't a big Ten/Rose shipper, but you could see The Doctor was head over heels in love with Rose; and he hadn't forgotten his connection to Sarah Jane. Eleven, however, seems to have completely and conveniently forgotten Rose.

I am fed up with characters we've only just met, like River Song, and Clara, immediately being invested with a significance they haven't earned.

And ... saved by a leaf?

The sooner Moffat leaves, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm also really fed up that I didn't enjoy the new Star Trek film.

11:44 pm - There's lazy and then there's the even lazier version as in my day.
Well, I tell you, it takes a special talent to have such a lovely, laaaaaaazy day (and I really shouldn't have gone to ALL that effort by inserting those extra 'a's). Yes, I'm such a kidder.

But even I can't believe I went to bed at 11:45 last night (quick, check to see if I'm running a fever) and slept all the way to ... uh ... 8:30 (I believe). Wow. For once I can see the seasonal change working in my favour.

And the only thing I did was watch a few more episodes of Kitchen Nightmares. I had to laugh (mostly in disgust) as several seemed to have acquired a passing acquaintance with the horrors of How Clean is Your House. Just substitute "kitchen" or "walk-in fridge" for "house". ::shudders in revulsion::

I popped in to SLOG for a bit and saw that the resident bigot had been busy commenting on a couple of columns. Ugh. I'd definitely call him an "ugly bag of mostly water".

Well, I'd better start getting ready for bed. I'm on duty at church tomorrow (and should be prepared for my closeup, lol). BD gave me a call as he won't be able to make it - so the joke is I'll throw him a virtual kiss on camera (and we all know even I can't do something THAT outrageous). Nighty-night and don't squeeze the piggies too tight!
